Controlled Substance Policy

At Studio Health, we are committed to providing safe, responsible, and effective care. This includes ensuring that controlled substances—such as certain pain relievers, anxiety medications, stimulants, and benzodiazepines—are prescribed and managed carefully.

Due to the nature of telehealth care, prescribing certain medications such as benzodiazepines can be more complex. As part of our commitment to your safety and well-being, these medications will only be prescribed in very limited circumstances, and only after a thorough evaluation.

Our Approach to Prescribing

Before prescribing controlled substances, we will explore alternative therapies, including behavioral therapies, lifestyle modifications, and other non-pharmacological treatments, to ensure that we are providing the best possible care for your unique needs.

Controlled substances are only prescribed when medically necessary and in accordance with state and federal regulations. We prioritize patient safety by:
✔ Exploring alternative treatments first.
✔ Conducting thorough evaluations before prescribing.
✔ Monitoring use to prevent misuse, dependence, or diversion.

Please note:

  • Schedule drugs will not be prescribed outside of recommended treatment options that reflects best practice and standard of care. This is inclusive of but not limited to stimulants and benzodiazepines

  • Schedule drugs will not be prescribed at initial visit Studio Health, no exceptions.

  • Benzodiazepines will rarely be prescribed due to their risk for misuse and dependency, particularly in telehealth settings.

Patient Responsibilities

To ensure safe and appropriate use, we ask all patients who receive controlled substances to agree to the following:

🔹 Use medications as prescribed – Never take more than the directed dose or share medications.

🔹 Store medications securely – Keep them in a safe place and away from others.

🔹 Communicate with us – Inform us if you experience side effects, lose your medication, or have concerns.

🔹 Follow monitoring requirements

  • Random urine drug screenings are required for ongoing medication refills of schedule II drugs.

    • Urine drug screenings are part of our commitment to monitoring the safe use of controlled substances. These screenings help ensure that medications are being taken as prescribed and that there are no concerns regarding misuse or interactions.

  • Prescription history reviews will be conducted periodically.

When Prescriptions May Be Stopped

Studio Health reserves the right to discontinue prescribing controlled substances if:
🚫 A patient repeatedly requests early refills or reports lost/stolen medications.
🚫 A drug test shows unexpected results.
🚫 There are concerns about misuse or noncompliance with this policy.

Controlled substance prescriptions are generally not eligible for early refills. Refills will only be authorized during scheduled follow-up appointments and based on appropriate medical evaluation.

🔹 In cases of emergency or urgent medical needs, we will assess and provide the appropriate medication and care based on your specific situation, while still adhering to all safety and legal guidelines.

Our Commitment to You

We believe in compassionate, ethical, and responsible care. If you have any questions about our controlled substance policy, please contact us. Your health and safety are always our top priority!
